Mass for Cancer Sufferers
"Is there anyone sick among you? Let them call for the elders of the Church and let them pray over him and anoint him in the name of The Lord." James 5:14-15
Invoking the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary through the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, in excess of 300 cancer sufferers, their families and caregivers entered into an atmosphere of prayer. Commentator Mary Orasi welcomed all who gathered at Our Lady of Hope on Sunday, April 27th for the Mass celebrated semi-annually especially for them.
Carrying the cross, Larry Arsenault led the Processional while members of the Cancer Ministry of the prayer community, Bernadette SanCartier and Paulette Bean, were candle-bearers. The first reading and responsorial Psalm were proclaimed by Gerry Bertrand, the second reading by Marlynn McBain, and the Gospel by Deacon Victor Vere. Chrissie MacDonald, also a member of the Cancer Ministry, and Jeannette Rainville presented the Offertory gifts.
Speaking of the upcoming Feast of Pentecost, celebrant and homilist for this special liturgy, Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe encouraged the participants to spend time in contemplative prayer, opening themselves more fully to the Lord and giving Him more space in their lives. Because of his own experience with cancer the Bishop was able to offer meaningful words of hope and encouragement to his listeners. He acknowledged the excellent treatment received by cancer patients in the Sudbury Region and expressed gratitude to the members of the medical profession, volunteers and caregivers who are responsible for their care.
Father André Tremblay, pastor of St. Mathieu's parish, led the opening prayers for The Sacrament of the Sick, which was administered by Bishop Plouffe; Msgr. Raymond Farrell; Fr. Tremblay; Fr. Jean Gobeil, s.j., of Villa Loyola; and Fr. Loyola, pastor of St. Anthony's Parish.
Appropriate hymns of praise, joy and hope by the Spirit-filled group ‘Salt of the Earth’, greatly enhanced the liturgy. Following the Mass everyone was invited to a reception in the gathering space of the parish, prepared and hosted by members of the little servants of Christ The King prayer community
The next special mass and Sacrament of the Sick for cancer sufferers, their caregivers and families is planned for the Fall of 2008.
