Think safety first this Christmas
Tips For The Christmas Season
Catholic Mutual (Canada) has asked us to share the following tips with all those who are preparing for Advent and Christmas:
With the arrival of Advent and Christmas just weeks away, we need to keep safety in mind when we decorate our parishes and schools to celebrate the season.
-
Use artificial trees and wreaths. Most fire regulations prohibit the use of live trees and wreaths in churches, schools, and health care facilities.
-
No candles or open flame devices can be used around the decorations.
-
All lighting must be Underwriter Laboratory (UL) or Factory Mutual (FM) tested, approved and labeled. The lights must be inspected to ensure they are in good condition and are safe to use.
-
Electrical cords must also be of the approved type and placed so they are out of areas of foot traffic to prevent trip and fall injuries and damage to the cords, which can create both fire and electrical shock hazards.
-
Do not allow electrical outlets and circuits to be overloaded with too many lights or other decorations that use electricity.
-
Do not place any decorations in exit pathways or near exit doors.
Even if local codes allow the use of live trees, we recommend against their use. But if you choose to use them in a display, please follow proper care requirements.
-
Cut 1 1/2 to 2 inches off the bottom of the live tree and immediately place it in a sturdy, water holding stand. Let the tree sit overnight to acclimate to the conditions inside the building and to ensure it will absorb the water. When using more than one live tree, please ensure they are kept at least 10 feet apart at all times.
-
Once you are sure the tree can absorb the water, you can decorate it following the guidelines listed above.
-
Water the tree daily. This is very important.
-
Do not keep a live tree on display for longer than 15 days. After that time, the tree will dry out quickly and become a serious fire hazard.
For more detailed information on what is allowed in your community, please contact your local or state/provincial fire authority having jurisdiction.
The Risk Management Department at Catholic Mutual would like to wish you a joyous and safe Christmas Season!!
